OVERVIEW
Italy is known for its influential presence in the fashion and textile industry. Through learning about fashion design in Milan to manufacturing textiles in Prato my time here has made me consider once a garment reaches the end of its life what happens next? Combating Consumption is a project that explores the survival of textiles through sustainable practices.
As humans, we consume fashion daily. However, it is the choices we make with our clothing that are paramount to the impact it creates on the future of the environment. My survival project Combating Consumption provides a guide that informs people with an interest in fashion of how to take the initiative to consume consciously through the idea that clothing is continuous. The guide is based on three steps of the fashion circular process: consuming, repairing and reusing, and recycling.
Consume
Consuming fashion can be done in various ways. My project informs how to sustainably shop with information on vintage, second-hand, and charity stores as well as local markets in Prato and surrounding areas. This information provides consumers with an alternative to consuming directly from stores and instead looking at what can be repurposed.
Repair and Reuse
This stage consists of step-by-step processes on how to upcycle and mend clothing as well as create things from excess textiles. Designed to ensure clothing can be repurposed or have a longer life, avoiding textiles being placed into landfill.

Recycle
The final stage of the process is the recycling stage. Combating Consumption educates consumers on how to recycle clothing appropriately through donating to charity shops, donation bins, and programs. It additionally provides insight into local organisations in Prato on how they recycle clothes and combat consumption.
Targeted at people with an interest in fashion. The guides will be placed in accessible areas to the public such as Information centres and around Prato to bring awareness to Combating Consumption. Additionally, Combating Consumption has a social media presence on Instagram through posts highlighting top tips for upcycling and places to shop. The A5 100% compostable publication is made out of biodegradable and natural materials. The paper is dyed naturally with plants to produce bright and captivating colours across the pages to engage the audience.
Overall, Combating Consumption is accessible, informative, and realistic. Showcasing how people with an interest in fashion can pick up the guide and help the survival of the environment through continuous clothing.
